The Masque of the Red Death

The Masque of the Red Death ili The Mask of the Red Death (sh. Maska crvene smrti) je pripovjetka američkog književnika Edgara Allana Poea originalno objavljena 1842. u časopisu Graham's Magazine. Radnja je smještena u srednjovjekovnu ili renesansnu evropsku zemlju koju je pogodila smrtonosna zarazna bolest zvana "Crvena smrt". Protagonist je aristokrat po imenu Don Prospero koji se zajedno sa biranim uzvanicima povlači i zatvara u svoju opatiju i, uvjeren da je izbjegao smrti, organizira bal pod maskama na kome će se pojaviti tajanstveni lik pod maskom. The Masque je postala jedna od najpopularnijih i najpoznatijih Poeovih priča, kao i najčešće analiziranih; često se tumači kao alegorija na uzaludnost borbe protiv smrti, a nešto rjeđe kao odraz Poeovih iskustava sa tuberkulozom od koje mu je bolovala supruga, odnosno epidemijom kolere kojoj je svjedočio u Baltimoreu 1831. Bila je predmet nekoliko filmskih ekranizacija od kojih je vjerojatno najpoznatija verzija Rogera Cormana iz 1964. godine.
