N. T. Wright (Morpeth, 1. 12. 1948. – ), britanski teolog, svećenik, autor i profesor, ekspert za Novi zavjet i biskup Durhama od 2003. do 2010. godine.

Biografija

Wright je rođen 1948. u Morpethu, gradiću u Northumberlandu na sjeveru Engleske. Odgojen je u anglikanskoj porodici i već u dobi od sedam ili osam godina odlučio se angažirati kao ministrant. U mladosti je također pokazivao interes za sportom i muzikom – svirao je klavir, trombon i gitaru. Pohađao je školu Sedbergh (tada u Yorkshireu) gdje se fokusirao na proučavanje klasične antike. Godine 1968. upisao je preddiplomski studij klasične književnosti, filozofije i historije na Koledžu Exeter pri Univerzitetu u Oxfordu i 1971. stekao titulu prvostupnika (B.A.). U ovo vrijeme obnašao je dužnost predsjednika Oxfordske međukolegijalne kršćanske unije (OICCU). Godine 1973. na istom koledžu završio je i teologiju. Istovremeno, od 1971. obrazovao se za anglikanskog propovjednika na Wycliffe Hallu (Oxford) gdje je 1975. stekao titulu magistra (M.A.) i anglikanskog đakona, a za svećenika se zaredio sljedeće godine. Kasnije, Univerzitet u Oxfordu dodijelio mu je i stupanj doktora teologije (D.D.).

Godine 1975. Wright je postao mlađim istraživačkim članom oxfordskog Koledža Merton, a potom i kapelan. Od 1978. do 1981. radio je kao istraživački član i kapelan Koledža Downing pri Univerzitetu u Cambridgeu. Godine 1981. na Koledžu Merton obranio je doktorsku disertaciju (D.Phil.) pod naslovom Mesija i Božji narod: Studija u Pavlovoj teologiji s posebnim osvrtom na argument Poslanice Rimljanima (engl. The Messiah and the People of God: A Study in Pauline Theology with Particular Reference to the Argument of the Epistle to the Romans). Nakon stjecanja doktorata radio je kao asistent novozavjetnih studija na kanadskom Univerzitetu McGill u Montrealu (1981–1986), a zatim kao učitelj i kapelan na Koledžu Worcester i kao predavač Novog zavjeta na Univerzitetu u Oxfordu (1986–1993). Nakon što je napustio Oxford zaposlio se kao dekan katedrale u Lichfieldu (1994–1999), potom se nakratko vratio kao gostujući predavač na Koledž Merton, a 2000. preuzeo je poziciju kanonskog teologa u Westminsterskoj opatiji.

Ranih 1990-ih Wright je počeo s objavljivanjem monografija religijske tematike, uglavnom o Novom zavjetu. Između 1995. i 2000. pisao je kolumne za kršćanski časopis Church Times i popularnost njegovih objava nagnala ga je na izdavanje serije knjiga za široke mase. Godine 2003. zamijenio je Michaela Turnbulla na poziciji biskupa Durhama i obnašao je tu dužnost do 2010. kada ga je naslijedio Justin Welby. Dana 4. 8. 2006. imenovan je članom apelacijskog suda CECR, crkvenog suda Engleske Crkve, na period od pet godina. U aprilu 2010. objavio je da napušta Durhamsku biskupiju i u augustu iste godine preuzima poziciju istraživačkog profesora Novog zavjeta i ranog kršćanstva na Koledžu St Mary pri Univerzitetu St Andrews u Škotskoj. Tokom 2010-ih fokusirao se na istraživački rad i izdavanje novih knjiga.
