Star Wars Outlaws is an upcoming action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft under license by Lucasfilm Games. The game takes place during the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on 30 August 2024.[1]

Gameplay

Star Wars Outlaws is a single-player, third-person action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe.[3][4] As the first Star Wars video game to feature a fully open world, the game will feature stealth and open combat, vehicle combat, space combat, and branching dialogue.[5]

Premise

The game is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.[3] Outlaw scoundrel Kay Vess (portrayed by Humberly González) and her companion Nix (portrayed by Dee Bradley Baker)[6] "attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen",[7] in a journey across several planets, including familiar ones like Tatooine, Kijimi and Akiva, and never-before seen ones, like the moon of Toshara, which is inspired by the landscape of the Tanzanian savannah.[8]

Development

On 13 January 2021, Ubisoft announced that a Star Wars game was in development by Massive Entertainment and under license by Lucasfilm Games. The game will have a focus on its story and open world.[9] Massive Entertainment began recruiting additional members to their development team, in part due to developing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora alongside it.[10]

A cinematic trailer was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023.[11] The following day, ten minutes of gameplay footage was revealed at the Ubisoft Forward showcase.[5] It uses the Snowdrop game engine.[12] The game's development is led by game director Mathias Karlson and creative director Julian Gerighty.[3][13] Nikki Foy is the lead writer,[14] and Navid Khavari the narrative director.[13]

Gerighty said that the time period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was selected because his colleagues "are all huge fans of the original trilogy".[3] He also said that the setting created an ideal environment for an "established or rookie scoundrel to cut their teeth" as it created a moment where the Rebel Alliance are not "part of the picture", the Galactic Empire is "taking more and more control", and the criminal syndicates are "taking more power".[3]

The game is scheduled to release on 30 August 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.[1]
